World Changers is an approach to youth mission projects among Southern Baptists and other evangelical churches. For years, youth leaders had expressed an interest in finding types of activities that would help their youth to better understand missions through personal involvement. At the same time, individual churches were finding that the time and effort necessary to put together a “hands-on” work experience was extensive. As other organizations began to test and prove the validity of large-group missions and service projects, the then Memphis-based Brotherhood Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention began its own plans for such an endeavor.

I don’t know if you have heard our story so I’d like to retell it to you if that’s ok. Well…the North American Mission Board called us awhile back and ask if we (CBC) would like to put together a mission trip through World Changers and hook up with other Chinese churches around America. At the time, we were looking for vision and direction from the Lord and He so happened to bring this to us. In years past, we have done this trip but have stopped. The reason why we chose world changers was because it gave us a venue to meet and hook up with other Chinese churches. We have partnered with church from Atlanta, Houston, and Dallas. The vision of the mission board has always been to mobilize Chinese churches into mission.
Why in the world do missions anyways? Actually…why in the world are we PAYING and “suffering” in the middle of summer, probably sleep on hard floors, and interact with people that will get on our nerves? Ready for the bullet points?
Because we understand the Gospel – that we really know who we are and we have no hope in this life. That was until Christ stepped in and saved us…not just from eternal separation, but from us chasing stupid things. So we now understand who we truly are IN Him. We are given a purpose and someone that is worthy of worship. And because we understand the Gospel it leads to everything else
Because we want to experience community (like real community). Not just us getting along with each other. But as we do life (and believe me…a week of doing life) we get our own selfishness, pride, impatience, laziness exposed with one another…and then we can work through them together. Because we want to challenge each other and really get to know each other. And not just CBC folk (adults and youth) but also, the Gospel church – all believers. So we get to meet people who don’t look like us, don’t think like us, etc…but we do so because of the Gospel.
Because God has given us time, talents, energy, and resources NOT for us, but for us to push back onto the world. And yeah, we could have done it here…but we’re taking our talents and energy and giving back to a place where we’ll never go again. We’ll do what God has called us to, and let Him handle the consequences.
Because this WILL grow us and in doing so, we find more of Jesus. And as we find more of Jesus we find joy. So in essence, we are going to seek our own joy!
Here’s the part where I give you some advice and ways you can get ready. Ready?
Start praying for this trip: for yourself, for God to be very visible, for safety, for our church, for the future house you’ll be working on. Remember, unless God moves in this trip, it just becomes another event…and it’ll be worthless.
It’s not easy and sometimes uncomfortable. You will be stretched and God will challenge you to grow. Practice patience and learn how to serve without complaining.
Start getting in somewhat physical shape. Learn how to drink liquids during the day. Do a push up. Learn how to sleep early and wake up early. Good practice makes for a better World Changer
Save up dirty clothes that you might not want again. No need to bring fancy shamancy clothes because I promise you, they’ll be nasty by the end of the week. So bring clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty or throwing away.
Equipment that you’ll need: a hammer, goggles (like the ones they use in chemistry), and maybe a paint scrapper.
We will NOT be flying the banner of CBC nor that of Asian people. That is not the reason why we’re going. We’re going because of the Gospel…so we don’t want none of that “we’re better than you attitude”. In fact, I expect you to be missionaries when we get there – for you to get out of your church group and go meet other people.
Coming soon.
