CHRISTIANITY

Being A Christian
From the beginning God created everything in perfect rhythm and purpose. Everything was good and everything was created for joy & worship. But because of sin and us going “We want to do things our way!” we are born broken and the universe is messed up. Romans 6:23 says that the due consequences of sin is death. And this isn’t just eternal death & separation from God, but its death to everything we know. We chase things that can never satisfy us and we idolize things that will never fully bring us joy. We continue to make other things ultimate rather than God and therefore find ourselves desperately frustrated and lost.

But God, not based on anything that we do or any “goodness” of ourselves, but in his grace and mercy, has saved you from this brokenness and poured out every deserving wrath meant for you onto his Son Jesus Christ. And the Good News is that we come as we are – broken and dirty – and God cleans us and restores the original “goodness” into our lives. It is only by Jesus’ life and his death that we stand justified (declared holy) and righteous before an almighty God.

We have not earned our right standing nor could we ever be “good enough”. This right standing was afforded to us by a real historical person and a real, living God - Jesus.  We, therefore, follow Jesus wherever he may lead – through uncertainty, through his appointed leaders, through his Word found in Scripture. And this is the foundation of our depth and everything else. ..this is the joy that we seek – that everyone is looking for.

If you feel like Christ is inviting you to be part of his story and you realize that you desperately need him to save you…then turn to him in repentance (not just saying “sorry” but a honest turning from your sins) and put your trust in Him to save you, to lead you, and to be your savior and the Lord of your life.

Joining A Church
Paul says in his letter to the Ephesians, “There is one body and one Spirit – just as you were called to one hope that belongs to your call – one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.” This is what the biblical definition of Church is. I think many of us have an idea of what church is that is totally off from what the Bible says it is. And then I also think that many people “go” to church without “belonging” to a church.

  1. Becoming a member: The Christian journey begins and ends with Jesus. You find your identity and life in Jesus and from that moment you are “adopted” into a family. That’s what becoming a member means – you’re adopted into the family of God. You have the same mission, you have the same goal, and the same foundation.
  2. Becoming a member of a local church: Your personal salvation is a personal thing (which means, I cannot decide to be a Christian for you. BUT the Christian walk is a corporate thing (which means you must belong to a body. Why?
    1. To Grow: You do not know everything so you need people out there to teach you as well as for you to pass on your knowledge. This faith of ours constantly pushes you to grow deeper and deeper and you need others there with you as ya’ll continue to grow together.
    2. Accountability: If you’re trying to run this Christian thing alone…you’re going to have all these blind spots and think that you’re super awesome or something. The reason why Jesus put people together is because I can really know you – your good and your bad. And when I see you walking off the right path then I can, in love, call you out and pull you back on.
    3. Fellowship: Scripture says that we act like a body – when I hurt, you hurt, and when I laugh, you laugh. We start acting like the family that we should be and that’s hard because we’re selfish people and we’re prideful. But because of our foundation (Jesus) we have no enemy that is flesh and blood…rather, we hold fast to the cross and we work together for the sake of the kingdom.

If this is that place for you, if CBC & CBC Youth is that place where you want to grow deep, where you want to find people to open up to, where you can have genuine fellowship…then we ask you to become a member of this church. We ask that you honestly know Jesus as your savior (more information here) and then we ask that you become a member through baptism.
